Droid Razr

Why cant i pick up a wi fi signal with my new razr hd? i have to be within 3 feet of my router to get any connection or to even stay connected. This is unacceptable. My cheap htc phone worked ten times better than this, i thought i was upgrading? How can i solve this problem as i dont want excessive data charges on my bill.... Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
